Our Philosophy and How It Guides Our Pricing
Our guiding principle is do our best to produce healthy, structurally sound, and temperamentally stable dogs that will bring years of joy to your family. Each litter we are anticipating is being carefully planned with the intention of improving the breed. This requires years of dedication and preparation, careful selection of bloodlines and significant upfront investment in top-quality breeding dogs and their care. At Cedar Rock Golden Retrievers, we are expecting our first litter in Spring 2028, but we have been preparing for this litter since the Fall of 2025.
We understand that purchasing a puppy is a significant investment for you and your family. To provide clarity on how we set pricing, we want to share what goes into responsibly breeding and raising a well-bred Golden Retriever. Typically, pricing is set by program cost. If a puppy is breed in a high quality breeding program, maintaining conscientious and responsible standards, pricing will be reflected in the price of each puppy. Our pricing is based on the overall cost of maintaining an exceptional and ethical breeding program.
Investment in Breeding Dogs
The foundation of any breeding program is its dogs. We source our breeding dogs from some of the most respected programs. Costs for a premium individual breeding dog can be between $5,000 to $10,000.
Even after this investment, each dog must then pass extensive and costly health clearances, including:
- OFA certification for hips and elbows
- Cardiac evaluations by a board-certified cardiologist
- Eye exams certified through the Canine Eye Registry Foundation
- PennHIP testing
- DNA screening for conditions such as PRA1, PRA2, prcd-PRA, DM, NCL, and ichthyosis
If a dog does not meet these standards, they are removed from the program, resulting in both financial loss and delays—often setting breeding plans back by one to two years.
Medical Care & Ongoing Expenses
We prioritize the health and well-being of every dog and puppy in our care. This includes:
- Routine and emergency veterinary care (including possible C-sections)
- Vaccinations, deworming, and microchipping
- Daily vitamins, immune support, and joint supplements
- High-quality nutrition (averaging $55 – $100 per bag of food, plus fresh fruits, vegetables and meats)
- Exercise, training, shows and enrichment (It is hard to estimate all that goes in to showing, training, socializing, exercising and enriching the life of an individual breeding dog. Each dog is different and will have differing needs.)
Additionally, we account for everyday operational costs such as grooming supplies, toys, crates, bedding, climate control, and facility maintenance.
Breeding Process Costs
Planning a litter often begins months or years in advance. While natural breedings are ideal, many require advanced reproductive support, including:
- Progesterone testing to determine optimal timing
- Stud fees ranging from $2,000–$3,500
- Semen collection, shipping, and handling (fresh or frozen)
- Artificial or surgical insemination procedures
- Ultrasound and X-ray imaging to confirm pregnancy and assess delivery
These steps alone can total between $2,500 and $10,500—before puppies are even born.
Raising the Litter
Once puppies arrive, the real work begins. Raising a litter properly is a full-time, around-the-clock commitment. Costs associated with raising a litter include:
- Additional nutrition and supplements for the dam
- Whelping expenses (including emergency C-sections up to $6,500)
- Whelping supplies and sanitation
- Daily cleaning and laundry
- Puppy food, enrichment items, and supplies
- Veterinary care, vaccinations, deworming and microchipping
After birth, additional estimated costs for raising a litter range from $4,000 to $10,000—excluding the immense time and labor involved and the costs associated with maintaining our facility and program year round.
Time, Care, and Early Development
Raising puppies is time intensive. It’s exhausting but deeply rewarding . Our program includes:
- Early Neurological Stimulation
- Potty and crate training beginning at 4 weeks
- Socialization with children, adults, and other dogs
- Extended time with the dam to strengthen immunity
- Temperament and structural evaluations at 7 weeks
Our puppies are raised in a home environment with constant loving interaction, preparing them for a smooth transition into family life. Early training starts right away.
A Commitment to Excellence
While nature is unpredictable and no breeder can fully control every genetic outcome, our commitment to excellence is absolute. We are focused entirely on what we can control: rigorous health testing, meticulous parent selection, and science backed early development curriculum. By perfecting our inputs, we are hoping to give every puppy the absolute best foundation for a healthy, happy life. We control the variables we can, so that you welcome a puppy raised with unmatched care, integrity and love.
Our Purpose
Our purpose is not only to bring joy to the families who welcome our puppies into their homes, but to advance the breed through meticulous genetic selection, ensuring that every litter we will bring into the world offers predictable temperaments, structural soundness and a lifetime of exceptional companionship.
We couldn’t be more excited to help you welcome the newest member to your family. We are planning, preparing and laying a the foundation —you’re also benefiting from the relationship we have with our mentors. There are years of dedication, experience, and investment behind your puppy. All of that preparation will lead to the final handoff. That’s the most exciting part and it represents the culmination of extensive planning, care, and resources devoted to producing a sound, healthy, and well-balanced dog that will be able blend right in to your family.
We hope that this gives you some reassurance about our program. We believe that our approach will allow for close attention to each dog, thoughtful socialization, and high standards of care.
