Yesterday afternoon and into the evening, I had the privilege of helping a first-time Golden Retriever momma welcome six adorable puppies into the world.
There was something deeply special about being present for a litter’s arrival—especially because the mother was experiencing whelping for the first time. The room was quiet and purposeful. Every sound, movement, and small sign from mom took on great importance. The arrival of these newborn puppies was a substantial reminder that new life is both miraculous and humbling.
This sweet Golden girl handled the experience beautifully. As a first-time mother, she was given reassurance, calm support, and familiar surroundings as labor progressed. Her whelping area was warm, clean, and peaceful, so she could focus on the work ahead. Over 3 hours, one by one, six precious puppies made their entrance into the world.
First-Time Momma’s Big Day
Whelping can be an emotional experience for a new mother and for those entrusted to help her. Some first-time mothers need gentle guidance as they learn to settle with their newborns, clean them, and encourage them to nurse. This Golden momma seemed to understand each step right away.
It was magical to watch her loving heart emerge with every puppy. As each baby arrived, she grew more confident in her new role. So did I. 🙂 By the end of the evening, she was resting with her puppies tucked safely against her, listening to their tiny squeaks and keeping them warm.
Those first nursing sessions are among the most important moments after delivery. Colostrum—the first milk produced by mom—provides newborn puppies with essential nourishment and maternal antibodies. Seeing every puppy latch, nurse, and settle is one of the greatest reassurances a breeder can have.
Six Little Golden Miracles
Each puppy arrived safely, was checked over, given a ribbon, weighed, and placed close to mom to nurse. I swear, they began growing and puffing up into healthy little sacks of wiggles right before my eyes. Their world was simple in the first few hours: warmth, milk, sleep, and the comfort of their mother and littermates. In the hours and days following birth, the littler will be watch for the small but meaningful signs that will let the breeder know everyone is doing well:
- Strong crying and active movement after birth
- Warm bodies and healthy pink coloring
- A good latch and steady nursing
- Full little bellies after feeding
- Steady weight gain
- A calm, attentive mother caring for her litter
These first days will be quiet, tender, and incredibly important. The puppies will be checked and weighed frequently to make sure they are nursing well and thriving, while mom has the care and rest she needs to recover.
The Importance of Being Prepared
Helping with a delivery is not simply about being present for the exciting moment puppies are born. It requires preparation, patience, close observation, and a willingness to act quickly if mom or a puppy needs help.
This litter was thoughtfully planned by their breeder long before these six little ones arrived, with careful consideration given to the future of the puppies and their mother. Before a planned litter arrives, it is important to have:
- A clean, secure whelping space prepared well in advance
- Fresh bedding and a safe heat source for newborn puppies
- A reliable thermometer, scale, and whelping supplies
- Emergency contact information for a reproductive veterinarian
- A plan for monitoring mom before, during, and after delivery
- Time set aside for close supervision in the early days
Even with excellent preparation, every whelping is different. A responsible breeder stays calm, pays close attention, and knows when a situation calls for veterinary support. Thankfully, this was an uncomplicated whelping. Nature is incredible. This Golden Momma’s instincts seemed to take over immediately as she tore the sacs, tended the cords, and carefully cleaned each pup. It was remarkable to watch those maternal behaviors unfold so naturally.
A Beautiful Beginning
Today, momma will be resting comfortably and learning the rhythm of motherhood. Her six babies will be nursing, sleeping, and beginning their journey surrounded by warmth and care.
All Is Right in the World Today
There will be many long nights ahead for these little ones, countless weigh-ins, little milestones, puppy breaths, and growing personalities to discover. But for now, there is a healthy mother, six beautiful puppies, and I am so grateful to have been invited to witness the beginning of their lives.
