At Cedar Rock Golden Retrievers, every decision we make begins with a long-term vision: to thoughtfully improve the Golden Retriever breed while raising exceptional companions for our families. Today marks an exciting milestone for one very special puppy—Meadow.
At just 9 weeks old, Meadow has already begun her journey as a future part of our breeding program. She was carefully selected for Cedar Rock based on her outstanding lineage and historically healthy pedigree. Meadow comes from a line of English Cream Golden Retrievers known not only for their beauty, but for their longevity, stable temperament, and proven health. Many dogs in her lineage have gone on to become competitive show dogs, therapy companions, and service animals—exactly the kind of legacy we strive to continue.
Today, Meadow completed her DNA swab. We use Embark for Breeders, one of the most trusted and comprehensive genetic screening tools available. This test analyzes over 270 genetic health conditions, with a strong emphasis on breed-specific risks that are particularly important for Golden Retrievers.
For our breed, Embark screens for key conditions such as ichthyosis (a skin disorder), multiple forms of progressive retinal atrophy (which can lead to vision loss), osteogenesis imperfecta (brittle bone disease), muscular dystrophy, and rare neurological conditions like NCL5. These insights allow us to understand Meadow’s genetic makeup on a deeper level and make responsible, informed decisions for her future.
Beyond identifying potential risks, DNA testing also helps us evaluate genetic diversity and predict outcomes for future pairings, including the coefficient of inbreeding (COI). This allows Cedar Rock Golden Retrievers to thoughtfully plan litters that prioritize health, structure, and temperament.
While DNA testing is a critical piece of the puzzle, it is only one part of our commitment to responsible breeding. Meadow, like all Cedar Rock dogs, will also undergo comprehensive physical health clearances before ever being considered for breeding. These include evaluations of hips and elbows through OFA or PennHIP, cardiac exams by a board-certified cardiologist, and annual eye exams performed by a veterinary ophthalmologist.
Golden Retrievers are a beloved breed, but they can be prone to hereditary conditions such as hip and elbow dysplasia, heart disease, and eye disorders. We believe strongly in doing everything within our control to minimize these risks. It can be heartbreaking for families to welcome a puppy into their home, only to face serious health challenges years later. Our goal is to provide peace of mind—knowing that careful, science-based decisions were made every step of the way.
At Cedar Rock, we look beyond physical appearance. We rely on both genetic data and clinical evaluations to ensure we are producing the healthiest puppies possible and contributing positively to the future of the breed.
It will take approximately 2–4 weeks to receive Meadow’s Embark results. Based on her exceptional parentage, we are optimistic and hopeful that her results will come back clear—but like any responsible breeder, we wait with both excitement and humility. There is always something special about seeing the full genetic story of a promising young puppy unfold.
Once Meadow’s results are in, we will share them on our website for full transparency with our Cedar Rock families.
For now, we celebrate this important first step in Meadow’s journey—and look forward to all that lies ahead for this beautiful girl.
