Easy Frozen Treats for Golden Retrievers

Warm days are made for simple adventures—lake trips, sprinkler games, shady naps, and, of course, a little something special from the freezer.

Homemade frozen treats are such an easy way to add a bit of fun and enrichment to your Golden Retriever’s day. Best of all, many can be made with a few dog-friendly ingredients you may already have at home.

At Cedar Rock Golden Retrievers, our dogs love summertime days like these. They are always ready for a trip to the lake, a battle with the sprinkler, or patiently “waiting” near the freezer door in case a treat happens to appear. We like to keep frozen snacks simple and ready to go. All you need is a silicone mold or ice-cube tray, a blender or bowl, and a little room in the freezer.

As with any special snack, serve treats in moderation—especially for young puppies or dogs with sensitive stomachs.

Peanut Butter, Banana & Blueberry Bites

This classic combination is always a favorite.

  • 1 ripe banana
  • A small handful of blueberries
  • ½ cup unsweetened, xylitol-free peanut butter
  • A splash of water or plain unsweetened applesauce, if needed for blending

Mash or blend the banana, blueberries, and peanut butter until smooth. If the mixture is a little too thick to spoon easily, add a small splash of water or applesauce.

Spoon the mixture into a silicone mold or ice-cube tray and freeze until firm—usually about two hours. These make a creamy, fruity little treat that feels extra special on a warm afternoon.

Pumpkin Yogurt Freezer Cubes

For an easy variation, try mixing plain pumpkin purée with plain, unsweetened yogurt. Spoon the mixture into small molds or an ice-cube tray, then freeze until solid.

Be sure to use 100% plain pumpkin purée, not pumpkin pie filling, which can contain added sugar and spices. You can also add a small amount of xylitol-free peanut butter or a few berries if you would like to dress them up a bit.

Pumpkin, plain yogurt, banana, berries, carrots, apples, and peanut butter can all be lovely ingredients for simple homemade dog treats—as long as they suit your individual dog and are offered in sensible portions.

Blueberry Greek Yogurt Treats

This colorful option is quick to make and works especially well in smaller molds.

  • ¾ cup blueberries
  • ¾ cup plain Greek yogurt
  • ½ ripe banana

Blend everything until smooth, pour into molds, and freeze until firm. These small treats are easy to portion according to your Golden’s size, activity level, and regular diet.

Simple Savory Broth Cubes

Not every Golden has a sweet tooth! For dogs who prefer something savory, broth cubes are a wonderfully easy option.

Pour low-sodium broth made without onion or garlic into an ice-cube tray. Before freezing, you can add a few tiny pieces of cooked, unseasoned carrot, green bean, or sweet potato.

These are light, refreshing, and especially nice after a warm walk, a training session, or an afternoon spent playing outside.

A Few Friendly Reminders

Before making any homemade treat, take a moment to double-check every ingredient.

  • Use only xylitol-free peanut butter. Xylitol, sometimes listed as birch sugar, is dangerous for dogs.
  • Choose plain, unsweetened yogurt, and introduce dairy slowly if your Golden has not had it before.
  • Avoid unsafe ingredients such as chocolate, grapes, raisins, onions, and garlic.
  • Keep frozen treats small, especially for puppies, and supervise while your dog enjoys them.
  • If a treat is especially hard, let it sit out for a minute or two before serving.

A frozen treat does not need to be fancy to feel special. Whether it is a peanut butter banana bite, a pumpkin cube, or a simple savory broth treat, it is one more little way to make an ordinary summer day feel fun for your Golden Retriever.
